Born and raised in El Salvador, Ronald Martinez started dancing at the very young age of 6. Taught by his grandmother, afternoons were spent learning the steps of El Salvador’s traditional dance, Cumbia. These steps were soon followed by the Waltz, Merengue, Bolero and Cha Cha Cha.
Forced out of his native homeland due to civil unrest, Ronald and his family moved to Los Angeles, California. It was there that Ronald was first introduced to the jazzy rhythms of Salsa. “I fell in love with how you can express yourself through the rhythm of the music, and how you can make your partner feel that they are the only person on that dance floor.”
Ronald opened his first studio in Victoria, British Columbia, where he began developing the distinctive Martinez style of Bachata for which he is known. He now has his studio in Vancouver. For the last 12 years, Ronald has travelled to Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, the United States, and throughout BC to teach, perform, and train. He has trained at numerous congresses, conventions, and festivals, and with companies such as Somos El Son Dance Co (Seattle), Instituto Superior de Arte (Havana), and Salsa Con Clave International Dance School (Mexico City).
Ronald teaches weekly classes at Dancey Ballroom and Dance Studio on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as weekend workshops, and he is also one of the instructors in our monthly One-Day Beginner Salsa Bootcamps
Bachata

Learn Bachata from Vancouver’s best! Ronald’s unique teaching style will have you dancing Bachata on the dance floor in no time! In class you will learn the skills and techniques you need to make you a true Bachatero and pick up the passion that defines all great dancers. Ronald will be teaching three levels of Bachata at the DANCEY BALLROOM and Dance Studio followed by practice time and social dancing at the weekly Thursday Bachata Social (9:30pm to midnight). Admission to the social is complimentary for Ronald’s Bachata students.

Introduction to Kizomba

Starting March 20th, Ronald will be teaching a series of weekly group classes to introduce Vancouver to the world of Kizomba. Perfect for Salsa and Bachata dancers alike. This series of carefully handpicked moves and techniques will introduce you to the smooth moves of Kizomba by building up a framework of basic steps. It will be easy to learn, each move based on the foundation of walking with the Kizomba feel.
Due to the nature of the dance, partnering in class will be necessary. You may attend without a partner however class attendance will be by registration only. No drop-ins will be permitted to the new Kizomba classes.
Practice what you learn immediately after class at the weekly Salsa Bachata Kizomba Social (9:30pm to midnight). Admission to the social is complimentary for Ronald’s Kizomba students

Ronald’s salsa classes build progressively from the fundamental steps to fun combinations, with hot new moves and all the essential techniques needed to execute them. The combinations will have you dancing the night away and will be thoroughly broken down and easy to understand.
Ronald teaches two levels of Salsa at the DANCEY BALLROOM and Dance Studio followed by a practice time and social dancing at the weekly Tuesday Salsa Social (9:30pm to midnight). Admission to the social is complimentary for Ronald’s salsa students.
